Saving the day

I arrived right on time to see Mrs G. I usually found her waiting for me, watching by the window at lunch time. She would laugh and smile and greet me with a chirpy voice as I walked into the hallway. On this day however, the house was eerily quiet. I walked in, wondering if she had fallen asleep in her chair. Mrs G was in her lounge looking very sad and worried. ‘Are you alright’, I asked her. She began to cry softly. She explained that the plumber must have left the door open when he came to fix her tap earlier and that Kitty her cat, must have escaped. She had looked everywhere for her and called her name but there was no sign of her at all. She was very sad. We all knew how much Kitty meant to Mrs G. She loved to chat to her throughout the day and would let her curl up at the foot of her bed at night. I knew I had to save the day. I told her, I would do my best to look for Kitty after I had made her lunch.

‘You still need to eat and take your medication,’ I told Mrs G. ‘Kitty would not want you to miss your meals,  just as you want her to come back to have her cat food’. I served her, her favourite sandwiches of sweetcorn and tuna, and made her a cup of tea. I then went up and down the footpath calling out Kitty’s name. I was about to get to the end of the footpath and was feeling hopeless, when suddenly I saw something white and fluffy jump out of the flowers. It was Kitty! She rushed to me, and I picked her up and took her back to Mrs G. Wow, I will never forget how she laughed and cried at the same time as she gave Kitty kisses and cuddles. I guess I saved the day. I left them both happily having their lunch, feeling good that I had made a difference.
